After a year’s worth of scrounging around for parts, the ranger motor is back and healthy in the breadvan. It was a happy work day.

The back story, at the July, hotter than heck Lemons at Autobahn, it ran great till about 12 hours when it came in with a blown radiator hose. We diagnosed a bad head gasket, and replaced it in about 2 hours.

The pistons were fine at that point, though you can see the funny colorization on right hand 3 and 4.

We sent it out again and it ran well for 1/2 hour until it lost another head gasket again and this time was pumping oil/water out of the crankcase. That was that.

In November we pulled it apart and saw things were more serious, with piston 3 and 4 showing detonation and broken rings.

Also, if you look at 6:oo on the exhaust valve seat area, there is a crack into the port area that formed in both cylinder 3 and 4. It may be that it just wore out and cracked, or it could have been just cause it was a very hot day.

Anyway, it was a pretty long slug getting parts and machine work all done. We ran it for maybe 20 minutes today, no leaks or funny noises. Getting this took three 500 mile round trips to my partner’s shop to get this diagnosed and running again. So it’s nice to get back to regular maintenance.

Confession: I prefer plain old HFCS Mountain Dew to Throwback. Oddly I prefer Mexican Coke and Dr. Pepper with real sugar to their HFCS counterparts.

PS - I do the cane surgar Dew because HFCS metabolizes in your liver unlike regular surgar. I figure that my liver has enough to worry about for me to add more load of tons of HFCS......
